Influence de la densite et de l'age des huitres japonaises (Crassostrea gigas ) sur la croissance et la composition biochimique en bassins de terre ArchiMer
Bodoy, A; Geiaron, P; Garnier, Jacqueline; Heurtebise, S.
Two different biomasses (100 g multiplied by m super(-2) and 1 kg multiplied by m super(-2)) of oysters were put in identical sea-water ponds, thus leading to different trophic conditions, corresponding to rearing techniques. Changes in growth, biochemical composition and sexual maturation were recorded for two age groups. The first one included 9 month-old oysters and the second one 21 month-old oysters, at the beginning of the experiment. For both age groups, significant differences were observed in growth and biochemical composition. Lipids were accumulated faster for the lower biomass. However, the only difference concerning glycogen was observed on the older oysters. They showed a peak at the lowest biomass and a decrease at the larger biomass. Sexual...

Innovative rapid solid-phase immunobead assay for the detection of okadaic acid and related DSP toxins in shellfish ArchiMer
Park, D; Fremy, J; Marcaillou, L; Gamboa, P; Gleizes, E; Masselin, P; Goldsmith, C.
The solid-phase immunobead assay (Ciguatect super(TM)) has been optimized to detect toxins associated with diarrheic shellfish poisoning (DSP). The Ciguatect super(TM) test kit utilizes a membrane to bind the toxins and a monoclonal antibody-latex bead solution as the determination step. The presence or absence of okadaic acid (OA) and related toxins is determined by binding the toxins to a membrane attached to a plastic strip and exposing the toxins ladened membrane to a monoclonal antibody-colored latex bead complex which has a high specificity for OA and related polyether compounds. The intensity of the color on the membrane denotes the presence of the toxins. A rapid extraction method (REM super(TM)) has been developed to allow for confirmation of...

Inventory of mollusks from the estuary of the Paraíba River in northeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Lima,Silvio Felipe Barbosa; Lucena,Rudá Amorim; Santos,Galdênia Menezes; Souza,José Weverton; Christoffersen,Martin Lindsey; Guimarães,Carmen Regina; Oliveira,Geraldo Semer.
Abstract: Coastal ecosystems of northeastern Brazil have important biodiversity with regard to marine mollusks, which are insufficiently studied. Here we provide an inventory of mollusks from two sites in the estuary of the Paraíba River. Mollusks were collected in 2014 and 2016 on the coast and sandbanks located on the properties of Treze de Maio and Costinha de Santo Antônio. The malacofaunal survey identified 12 families, 20 genera and 21 species of bivalves, 17 families, 19 genera and 20 species of gastropods and one species of cephalopod. Bivalves of the family Veneridae Rafinesque, 1815 were the most representative, with a total of five species. Gastropods of the family Littorinidae Children, 1834 had the greatest species richness. The most abundant...

Isognomon bicolor (C.B. Adams) (Bivalvia, Isognomonidae): primeiro registro para o Brasil, redescrição da espécie e considerações sobre a ocorrência e distribuição de Isognomon na costa brasileira Zoologia
Domaneschi,Osmar; Martins,Claudio Mantovani.
The bivalve family Isognomonidae is represented in the Western Atlantic by the living genera Crenatula Lamarck, 1804 and Isognomon Solander, 1786. I. alatus (Gmelin, 1791) and I. radiatus (Anton, 1839) are the only Isognomonidae referred to the Brazilian malacofauna. The present work refers to the first record and geographic distribution of I. bicolor along the Brazilian littoral, and presents a re-description of the species based on shell characters, which include those of the prodissoconch. The occurrence of I. alatus and I. radiatus along the Brazilian littoral could not be confirmed, despite the intensive search for these Isognomonidae from Rio Grande do Norte through Rio Grande do Sul.

La densite, un critere de qualite applicable en ecloserie aux embryos de Pecten maximus (mollusque bivalve) ArchiMer
Faure, Catherine; Devauchelle, Nicole; Dorange, Germaine.
The quality of the scallop embryos is determined by the spawners characteristics as well as by the external factors they support during the maturation and the spawning phases. All these parameters are not still well controlled during the artificial conditioning in the hatcheries. As a consequence, the quality of the embryos is drastically variable and with them, the larvae performances in terms of survival and growth rates. It would be interesting to get a simple and quick test which would allow the estimation of the spawns quality. The embryos density, evaluated by isopycnic centrifugation of Percoll medium, is well adapted to this objective. Actually, a centrifugation of embryos two hours after fertilization separates them in 3 stratum with their density...

La mytiliculture dans le "Pertuis Breton": synthèse des travaux réalises de 1980 a 1992 ArchiMer
Dardignac, Marie-jose.
The studies carried out between 1980 and 1992 in the "Pertuis Breton" showed that mussels growth was systematically reduced near the coastline for an identical immersion time. No relationship was established between current pattern, stocking biomass and growth results. In contrast, poor growth was strongly correlated to seawater quality and especially to high seston load. The author suggests further studies which could confirm and complement these results: a better environment understanding through data acquisition, inclusion of additional parameters, studies on factors affecting shellfish quality. Furthermore, specific studies are proposed which are aimed at optimising mussel production in the Pertuis Breton. This includes a constant spat recruitment...

Late Devonian (Frasnian) bivalves from the Nocedo Formation: the results of Wilhelm Kegel’s 1927 field trip to northern Spain Naturalis
Amler, M.R.W..
During a field trip to the Peña-Corada Unit of the southernmost Esla region of the Cantabrian Mountains in 1927, the German stratigrapher Wilhelm Kegel sampled brachiopods and bivalves from a section in the Laoz valley near La Ercina. The stratigraphic position is believed to be part of the Nocedo Formation of Frasnian age. This fauna includes poorly preserved steinkerns of a near-shore bivalve fauna that was prepared for publication including labels and proposed names, but never published. The fauna represents only a very small and random part of the former community. But as information on Frasnian bivalves is scarce, the few specimens add important information on the distribution and palaeogeographic occurrence of near-shore, that is, Rhenish Facies...

Late Maastrichtian-Danian Mytilids and Pinnids (Mollusca: Bivalvia) from Northern Patagonia, Argentina Ameghiniana
Griffin,Miguel; Parras,Ana; Casadío,Silvio.
The Upper Cretaceous - lower Paleogene rocks from northern Patagonia yield a rich fauna of marine mollusks that may be useful in elucidating paleobiogeographic and paleoenvironmental changes taking place across the K/P boundary in the region. Most of the mollusk faunas remain poorly understood, as the preservation is generally deficient. This paper describes three new species of mytilids (Septifer mayai n. sp., Mytilaster ? edseli n. sp. and Gregariella amara n. sp.), and records four species of pinnids, one of which is new (Plesiopinna pampeana n. sp.). All the material comes from the Maastrichtian Jagüel Formation, and the Maastrichtian/Danian Roca Formation, exposed in the provinces of Río Negro, Mendoza and La Pampa (Argentina). A survey of the...

Les peuplements benthiques du plateau insulaire de la Martinique et des zones bathyales adjacentes. Cas particulier de la malacofaune ArchiMer
Paulmier, Gerard; Durand, Francoise.
Several oceanographic surveys in Martinique waters with, as main objectives, either geological mapping and evaluating marine aggregate resources of research into deep water carcinologie resources, nafe produced interesting informtion on benthic pppulations situated from the infralittoral to the bathyal shelf, for the wole of faunistic groups and more specifically for the malacofauna. The distribution of the various faunistic group has been analysed in function to the bathymetric, edaphic and possibly, thermic factors. The infralittoral zones, up to the 20 metres isobath, and circalittoral, between 60 and 80 metres, are known to have the richest populations. Corals, sponges, polychaete annelida and molluscs are the best represented, numerically as well as...

Mantle histology, histochemistry and ultrastructure of the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera (L.) ArchiMer
Jabbour-zahab, Roula; Chagot, Dominique; Blanc, François; Grizel, Henri.
The edge and isthmus of the mantle of Pinctada margaritifera (Mollusc, Bivalvia) were studied using light and electron microscopy from a morphological and histochemical point of view. Six areas with several subareas were differentiated in the mantle edge. One of these areas is similar to the epithelium isthmus, Trials to elucidate the nature of the pigment responsible for the black colour of the shell and pearl indicate a melanin-like material. Possible functions of the distinctive epithelial areas in Pinctada margartifera mantle are discussed according to available data on the secretion of organic matrix of the shell, protein sclerotization and deposition of crystals in some pearl-forming molluscs. Three different epithelial areas in the outer mantle edge...

Mercury in the bivalve Anadara (Senilia) senilis from Ghana and Nigeria OMA
Joiris, C.R.; Azokwu, M.I.; Otchere, F.A.; Ali, I.B..
Samples of the bivalve Anadara (Senilia) senilis collected from a closed lagoon (Sakumo) and two open lagoons in Ghana (Benya and Ningo; n=550), and the Bonny river estuary in Nigeria (n=620), were analyzed for their total and organic mercury content. Total mercury concentration showed significant spatial differences, with median values of 0.1 µg/g dry wt. in the closed lagoon, 0.2 in the estuary and 0.3 in the open lagoons. Concentration tended to be higher during the dry season in the lagoons, but lower in the estuary. The median relative organic concentration varied between 20 and 60% methyl Hg, depending on location and season. Age effects were detected in the lagoons, total Hg concentration decreasing with length.

Mesure de la retention de Skeletonema costatum par Ruditapes philippinarum (Mollusque, Bivalve) en fonction de la longueur des colonies algales: Principes methodologiques ArchiMer
Sauriau, P; Baud, Jean-pierre.
Based on Coulter Counter data, a new method is proposed to study the influence of the polymorphous variability in size as well as in shape of the diatom species Skeletonema costatum on the physiological performances of the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum . Three conditions are required in order to convert volumetric data determined with the Coulter Counter into metric data, i.e. (1) stability of the pervalvar diameter of the diatom chains, (2) statistical independence between length and pervalvar diameter of the diatom chains, and (3) negligible level of coincident passages through the aperture orifice. Under these three conditions, the mean length (l) of a S. costatum chain can be related to the mean pervalvar diameter (d) of diatom chains and to the...

Microalgal production in oyster ponds: Nutrition and dissolved organic nitrogen ArchiMer
Maestrini, S; Robert, J.
Microalgal population of oyster ponds is dominated by several tychobenthic diatoms which provide a very good food to grow oysters. The mechanisms which allow them to dominate have been put under research. H.P.L.C. analysis demonstrated 17 amino acids amounted 10-17% of total DON, i.e. 0.6-11.5 mu g-at/l nitrogen. Serin and glycin were the most abundant. None of the substances was related to the presence of oyster. Glutamic acid, alanin and ornithin concentrations showed the greatest variations; they are suspected to play the major role as nutrient source. Screening of nutritional capabilities of ten local isolates of micro-algae to use 42 organic substances as sole source of nitrogen, demonstrated urea, glutamic acid and hypoxanthin are assimilated by all...

Microarray-Based Identification of Gonad Transcripts Differentially Expressed Between Lines of Pacific Oyster Selected to Be Resistant or Susceptible to Summer Mortality ArchiMer
Fleury, Elodie; Moal, Jeanne; Boulo, Viviane; Daniel, Jean-yves; Mazurais, David; Henaut, Alain; Corporeau, Charlotte; Boudry, Pierre; Favrel, Pascal; Huvet, Arnaud.
Summer mortality of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas is the result of a complex interaction between oysters, their environment, and pathogens. Heredity appears to be a major factor determining the sensitivity of oysters to summer mortality, allowing resistant (R) and susceptible (S) lines to be produced. We conducted genome-wide expression profiling of R and S gonads during the 3-month period preceding a summer mortality event, using a cDNA microarray that we designed. ANOVA analysis revealed that 34 genes were differentially expressed between R and S lines on four dates preceding the mortality event. Annotation of some of these genes highlights reproduction and its allocation and antioxidant defenses as the main pathways that operate differentially...

Molluscan assemblages from the marine Holocene of Uruguay: composition, geochronology, and paleoenvironmental signals Ameghiniana
Martínez,Sergio; Rojas,Alejandra; Ubilla,Martín; Verde,Mariano; Perea,Daniel; Piñeiro,Graciela.
Dates of marine Holocene molluscs from Uruguay (Villa Soriano Formation) range from 6849 to 1858 cal. years BP. There are no significative gaps among the different ages obtained, with the exception of the interval 2276-2830 calculated years BP. Two kinds of concentrations are distinguished: autochthonous, for which a low energy depositional environment is inferred, and parautochthonous, deposited in foreshore and nearshore high-energy environments. Results of different types of multivariate analyses on presence-absence and abundance data show that only three localities are clearly differentiated from the others. The discrimination of two of them (Arazatí, Las Cañas) is explained by the presence of only one or two species, but the third (Punta Rasa) is the...

Mendonça,Luana Marina de Castro; Guimarães,Carmen Regina Parisotto; Lima,Silvio Felipe Barbosa.
Abstract The malacofauna bycatch of sea-bob shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri (Heller, 1862) trawl fisheries on the coast of Sergipe was studied for 5 years. The malacofauna bycatch considered was obtained in nine oceanographic sampling campaigns carried out between May 1999 and June 2003 in 18 stations distributed in six transects along depths of 10, 20 and 30 m. A total of 2,669 individuals of mollusk belonging to 54 species were captured on the 18 sea-bob shrimp trawl stations carried out along the coast of Sergipe. The considerable richness of mollusks was composed by 19 families and 31 species of gastropods, 12 families and 19 species of bivalves and 2 families and 4 species of cephalopods. The highest abundance were observed at stations 13 (373...
